Fun fact: In November 1979 Iranian students overran the US Embassy in Tehran took 66 Americans hostage, 52 of them were held for over a year. At that time, Iran was the largest producer (and exporter) of pistachios in the world. (Some might be old enough to remember the red ones that got dye all over your fingers.) The US responded with a complete embargo on trade with Iran

thus shutting off access to their largest market. Growers in California respond by planting thousands of pistachio trees. Pistachio trees take over 25 years to mature and bear fruit. California is now the largest producer in the world and "pistachios are everywhere",
