My dearest wish today is that Biden takes all the military funding and weapons earmarked for Israel and sends them to Ukraine. Trump will surely support his fellow asshat Bibi, but if Biden could just find the balls to cut off military funding for genocide for even a few months, it would be a big win.
✡️🇺🇸 divine intervention would work for me. Anything but the incoming apocalypse. Jack Smith, Judge Merchan (Merchand?) let us down. orange oompa loompa should’ve been in jail a LONNNNGGGG time ago. Sorry. Off topic 🤷🏻♀️
Part of the problem with the whole "get along with your neighbor" thing: If your neighbor flat out does not believe in actual real things, like climate change, or Covid-19, or the need for vaccines, it's really difficult — make that impossible — to bridge the divide. In some instances, there are not "good people on both sides"; there are rational thinking people on one side, and absolute lunatics on the other. Can't reason (or even have a useful conversation) with a lunatic.
My question would be whether it's possible to ignore the divide. I understand that misunderstanding the fundamental nature of COVID can pose an immediate risk. But misunderstanding climate change (let's say) doesn't have to be a deal-breaker for enjoying a sunny day, does it?
"The divides between us - on the internet and in real life - are counterproductive, give more power to autocratic tendencies, and represent what I think is the biggest obstacle to a brighter future."
I also think that often our superficial differences mask more fundamental agreements. So a focus on the rift ends up being both counterproductive and needlessly painful.
I tried to read the 'gifted' article by Tom Nichols "Trump voters Got What They Wanted" but even after I signed in I could read only a few paragraphs and was prompted to sign in (I was) or start a free trial. Not really a gifted article.
Dave Pell, Thank you! Thank you for all you do. Today, I love the link to Benjamin Dreyer's substack. Up The Down Staircase is a title I haven't thought about in decades and I am excited to read it again all these years later. Having good books and good TV to watch will help keep us sane. I'm not even looking at main stream media anymore, print or broadcast. All I need lives on SubStack. I love that you've quoted HCR, my port in a storm for many years. I'm glad you'll be taking a few days off to hang with your son. We all need to give ourselves time right now. And then come back to keep up the fight. Sandy
Trump won because the Democrats like me and you believed that people think about cause and effects. They don't. They feel things are either good or bad. The Dems have to start over and have a long horizon. With only three months and the usual liberal platform, she didn't have a chance.
I now think she didn't have a chance because she's a woman. And a woman of color to boot!!! I feel Kamala ran an absolutely brilliant campaign. And all the finger pointing going on now in the mainstream media is a complete waste of time. They failed us and I am no longer interested in spending time there.
Trump, Mr Fake Macho pervert , beat two women but lost to an old man who never left his basement. I thought Kamala would be the perfect, transformative candidate for America. As soon as I thought that I knew she wouldn’t win.
I’m new here. I just want to say I’m still throwing up on the floor. However, my cats aren’t eating it up. Neither am I at this point. I have to wallow in the puke that’s the orange oompa loompa for…well….four years. Yeah, it’s gonna be stinky in here for a long time but much worse out there. If CA wasn’t bout to drop into the ocean, as I’ve been hearing since I was six (65 now), it sounds like an acceptable country to move to.
