As to this: “They learned that the West is not built for discomfort. One oil shock and a single election cycle’s worth of patience, and the most powerful military coalition on earth stood down a regime it had on the ropes.” I disagree. They, and we, learned that when one rogue leader from one powerful country unilaterally, without any buy-in from that country’s allies, starts a war that neither the leader’s citizens nor the leaders or citizens of its allies wanted, the aggressor country will soon find itself on the ropes. The West can tolerate discomfort when there’s a good reason. There was no good reason for attacking Iran.
