The news tune out is real. And scary. While I know chances are a news article I'm going to read in every NextDraft edition is going to be a downer, I'm so thankful to have Dave putting information and background into compelling short reads and quite frankly, easy on the eyes. I know it's not all puppies and kittens in each newsletter, but I still look forward to reading it when it pops in my inbox.
regular news...isn't cutting it. CBS, NBC, ABC all give positive spins where there should be some serious warnings...or in depth coverage as to what it means to citizens. Fox news isn't and PBS is too damned long... I'm like Adrienne, get my news by reading it. HCR, Joyce Vance, Dave Pell, Hubbell and Kuo. enough, no F*cking TV broadcasts.
As to your #2, I definitely restrict the amount of news I hear, watch, and read every day. I hear and watch none (though I do sometimes overhear what my husband hears as he watches TV before I scuttle away to a distant part of the house). I do read news, but I keep it to a reasonable minimum. I want to know enough about what's going on so I can vote responsibly and participate somewhat intelligently in conversations with friends. I read your newsletter, a few NY Times stories, a few WaPo stories. I find it very hard to read "news" outside of those sources. I wouldn't read Fox stories of course, but I find MSNBC stories very hard to swallow as well. They are so exaggerated lots of the time. So yeah, I have to restrict myself for sanity, but I try to let in just enough that I can keep up with what is really happening.
Some days I only get news from your newsletter so thanks for writing it, and also for the gift articles.
