There's a non-lethal dog sport called Barn Hunt because dogs like to find vermin. (The rats are protected by tubes and switched out on a regular basis.)
A lot of dogs love it and can find multiple rats in minutes.
Some dogs - and this includes one of mine -- love it up to a certain point. They love it until they figure out no one is ever going to let them kill the rat.
My dog doesn't want to find rats -- she wants to hunt them down and destroy them. (Rats, mice, voles, shrews aka small furry things that run.)
Wild rats are a health hazard and vicious. It's not something untrained people should do with their dogs because of lepto and other diseases but crews like this are doing it right.
If the dogs were younger, I would love to take them out with these guys.
